Tate Modern collaborates with internationally acclaimed chef Santiago Lastra on bespoke menu inspired by Frida: The Making of an Icon

Tate Modern is delighted to announce a new culinary collaboration with internationally acclaimed London-based chef Santiago Lastra, founder of the Michelin-starred Mexican restaurant KOL, who has created an exclusive menu inspired by Tate Modern’s major exhibition Frida: The Making of an Icon.

Available for a limited time from 25 June to 31 August, the menu will be served daily at lunchtime and on Friday and Saturday evenings at the Tate Modern Restaurant, offering visitors a distinctive opportunity to experience the exhibition through both art and food.

Celebrated for his contemporary interpretation of Mexican cuisine and deep respect for heritage, Santiago has developed the menu in direct response to the life, work and enduring cultural legacy of Frida Kahlo. Drawing on the bold flavours, ingredients and culture of Mexico, which he reimagines with British produce, his dishes explore themes of identity, resilience and place - ideas that sit at the heart of Kahlo’s practice.

Born in the same city as Kahlo, Lastra has long felt a strong personal connection to the artist and her story. Central to Frida: The Making of an Icon is the way Kahlo transformed personal experience into a powerful artistic language. This idea has been a guiding inspiration for Lastra as he translates memory, place and emotion into flavour.

The menu will be available exclusively at Tate Modern Restaurant and can be enjoyed as a two-course set menu priced at £41, or as part of a special exhibition dining bundle (£66), combining lunch with entry to the exhibition. Tate Members will receive priority booking throughout April.

“At Tate Modern, we always look to extend the experience of our exhibitions beyond the confines of the galleries themselves,” says Hamish Anderson, CEO of Tate Enterprises. “Santiago’s menu inspired by Frida Kahlo allows visitors to engage with art through food, creating a richer and more immersive visit.”

Santiago Lastra adds: “Frida Kahlo has always been deeply important to me, - not only as an artist, but as someone who represents the spirit, strength and complexity of Mexican culture. Being born in the same city as her makes this collaboration especially meaningful to me in London. The menu is my way of honouring her legacy, translating the emotions, colours and stories found in her work onto the plate.”

The Santiago Lastra x Tate Modern menu will be available from 25 June to 31 August at the Tate Modern Restaurant. Reservations are strongly recommended.
